The first ever meeting of the FTCC Trojans and the Methodist University Monarchs JV went to the Trojans, 118-67. The Trojans have been playing very well and were not missing on much as they dominated in the cross-town game. We hope to keep playing this game and the Monarchs are hoping to reverse the outcome; this will be a fun game each year.
The Trojans opened the game with a balanced attack. Nick Kuhns started the year as an outside threat, but has developed a strong slashing attack and has had several high scoring games without many 3 pt. shots made. He was able to do both in the first half making two outside and scoring on four strong drives to the rim. Jabari Bowman had been outstanding from long range splitting his four 4 pt shots over the two halves on the night. Deion Stover, Johnny Hughes, and CJ Miller were strong on the boars and in the paint to provide the inside-outside balance. With the pressure on the ball defensively and quick tempo offense, the Trojans opened a 59-33 halftime lead and took a break.
The Monarchs hit twelve 3 pt shots on the night, but the show belonged to the Trojans. Andy Steve led the Monarchs with 27pts., eight 3 pt. baskets, but he could not get his teammates going along with him. In the second half, the Trojans expanded their lead as Bowman continued to score inside and out. Fellow guards, Tristen Rodriguez, Kehlo Chavis, and Rahman Mateen got on the board as the Monarch defense tried to slow down the inside play of Stover, Miller, and Hughes. All was for naught for the Monarchs as the Trojans topped the 100 pt mark with 7 minutes to play and tallied 118 pts. at the final buzzer.
Although this was a rout for the Trojans, it was the beginning of a new series of games that should be played annually with Methodist University and will develop a cooperative relationship with Monarch Athletics. Regardless of the outcome, it was local teams competing, and that is always good to watch.
