The Trojan Athletic Program has expanded to the diamond sports. Baseball and Softball are playing this spring and have opened their seasons.
To great fanfare, JP Riddle Stadium was outfitted with new signage and VIP’s were invited and deans and faculty showed their programs on a cold and damp day that was otherwise perfect for baseball. Approximately 500 people were at the field to see the Trojans host Patrick Henry CC from Martinsville, VA. The culinary program had cracker jacks, pretzels, peanuts, crab cakes, brats, and pulled pork. Thanks to all who were a part of making the event a success.
Dr. Keen threw the first pitch and did not show any rust as he cleared the plate with a change-up. Chris Zavala’s father joined Dr. Keen and threw a pitch as well. Despite the poor weather conditions, the games proceeded on time.
The Trojans were over matched by the Patriots and fell in the double header, 13-1 and 11-1. The weather was greatly improved on Sunday to wrap up the series, and again, the Trojans fell 12-1. A few bright spots were some highlight reel catches in center field and at second base. The Trojans know what they need to do to get ready for Wake Tech at home March 16 & 17.
The Lady Trojan Softball Team had much different outcomes in their games at Patrick Henry CC. They played a double header on Saturday, but were rained out on Sunday. The Ladies opened the game and fell behind 1-9 in the second inning. They came from behind on the power of Ashlee Naylor and Taylor Mieczkowski, who both hit homers. They took the first game 15-13.
They opened the second much the same by falling behind early. Naylor and Mieczkowski both hit out of the park again to spark at 9-7 win to sweep the double header. Mieczkowski hit for the cycle, as well, with a single, double, triple, and homer in the same game. The first in Trojan history.
Kind of mixed start to region play for two teams. Come out and see Trojan history made. The complete and up-to-date schedules are on the Athletics Website.
