The Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) Emergency Operations Response Plan (EORP) has established a comprehensive framework of policy and guidance for the college in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation operations, to include situations involving an armed intruder or hostage crisis on campus. The plan details capabilities, authorities, and responsibilities. It establishes the framework for mutual understanding among federal, state, county, municipal, and other public and private non-profit organizations.

RDS: Residency Determination Service
Who: NC Student Success Center is happy to announce our excellent fall 2021 line up of professional development workshops. These virtual workshops are available to all faculty and staff at our 58 colleges. We have presenters from a variety of our colleges along with national experts and representatives from the College Foundation of North Carolina to round out our offerings.
Class size is limited, and these great sessions are bound to fill up fast. Participants will be sent the Zoom links after registering for the workshops. What: A Journey from International Student to Community College Instructor: What Can We Do as Professional Educators to Meet the Needs of Our International/Foreign-born Students?
Presenter: Alexandru Lefter, FTCC Spanish Instructor
What can we as professional educators do to meet the needs of international/foreign-born students? What issues germane to this population should we be cognizant of? This presentation will raise awareness of frequent issues encountered by the international/foreign-born
population in a higher education context. We will discuss identity concepts such as acculturation/assimilation; language barriers in the classroom; and tips to help students navigate the practicalities of life in the United States. The presentation will also touch upon some frequent legal challenges specific to foreign-born students and tips to address them through mentoring and advising. To conclude, the speaker will share his personal experience as an international student and some of the lessons he learned along the journey from international student to college instructor.

Pillar One of Guided Pathways has always been about clarifying the path to direct entry in the workforce to good jobs or transfer with junior standing in a major on the path to a bachelor’s degree and good jobs — but over the 10 years of the guided pathways movement partners such as CCRC, JFF, Aspen and NCII have sharpened the connection to the workforce. 
Founder & President of NCII, Dr. Rob Johnstone will explore facets of the evolved mindset including integrating thinking from the Aspen Workforce Playbook and utilization of regional labor market data and creating the conditions for promotion-ready graduates from Aspen/NCII’s work on the Bank of America Jobs Initiative (a project which includes Central Piedmont Community College and NC Agricultural & Technical University-NC&T in addition to 10 other community colleges, 4 four-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions-HSIs, and 6 four-year public Historical Black Colleges and Universities-HBCUs).

What: Positionality and Pathways: Encouraging Reflective Practice
Presenter: Dr. Alexander S. Kappus, Senior Director for Student Success in the College of Education, NC State University
The Guided Pathways model encourages colleges to make deliberate decisions about student success, both in designing pathways and supporting students through their journey. In social science inquiry, scholars often write a positionality statement about how their identities may influence their research. How often do we consider how our own social identities may bias, cloud, or cause us to make harmful assumptions about students? In this session, participants will participate in an identity mapping exercise and consider ways to close equity gaps by encouraging a culture of reflective practice while carrying out the four pillars.

Trauma is widespread. It is an important topic for professionals in higher education because a student’s history of trauma influences their learning capacity. The negative effects of trauma can interfere with a student’s persistence and completion. Trauma also results in fear, mistrust, and inflexibility. Faculty and staff who are aware of trauma and their effects can better recognize them among their students and create a safer environment. In this session, you will learn about the prevalence of trauma among college students and gain a better understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their lifelong impact. Trauma is widespread. It is an important topic for professionals in higher education because a student’s history of trauma influences their learning capacity. The negative effects of trauma can interfere with a student’s persistence and completion. Trauma also results in fear, mistrust, and inflexibility. Faculty and staff who are aware of trauma and their effects can better recognize them among their students and create a safer environment. In this session, you will learn about the prevalence of trauma among college students and gain a better understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their lifelong impact. Virtual Classes Don’t Have to Be Boring!
Virtual teaching isn’t going away, at least for a while. You can embrace virtual teaching and lead amazing online classes that students love or ignore this trend and deliver sub-par pedagogy that everyone dreads (and eventually everyone ignores). Seem dramatic? It’s not. It’s what is happening at colleges across the country. Students are dropping out or changing schools when the online courses are unengaging.
Course Information
Here’s the good news. Virtual classes don’t have to be boring. Virtual classes can be meaningful, engaging, even inspiring. Join national renowned expert Dr. Amy Climer for this month-long, go-at-your-own-pace course. Learn to design and deliver virtual classes that you look forward to and your students love. Learn how to use technology to your advantage, design interesting class sessions that drive learning, and deliver content so it feels like you are in person. You’ll learn how to get students interested in sharing out loud, focused in class, and motivated to learn even while online. Who knows, you might even grow to love virtual learning. Calendar
All applications are due by Friday, March 11, 2022. Registrants will receive confirmation of their registration and information about the course launch within a few days of completing this form. The online course dates are March 14 – April 14 (it is asynchronous, go-at-your-own-pace). There are three optional one-hour live Q & A sessions throughout the course. What: A Journey from International Student to Community College Instructor: What Can We Do as Professional Educators to Meet the Needs of Our International/Foreign-born Students?
Presenter: Alexandru Lefter, FTCC Spanish Instructor
What can we as professional educators do to meet the needs of international/foreign-born students? What issues germane to this population should we be cognizant of? This presentation will raise awareness of frequent issues encountered by the international/foreign-born population in a higher education context. We will discuss identity concepts such as acculturation/assimilation; language barriers in the classroom; and tips to help students navigate the practicalities of life in the United States. The presentation will also touch upon some frequent legal challenges specific to foreign-born students and tips to address them through mentoring and advising. To conclude, the speaker will share his personal experience as an international student and some of the lessons he learned along the journey from international student to college instructor.

Transformational Leadership is a type of leadership style where teachers/leaders actively work with their students/followers to become better (more agential, accountable, positive, and healthy) people. Through this process, both teachers/leaders and students/followers are transformed into agents of change(especially in a collegial atmosphere). Aristotle speaks of this as a “moral type of friendship” which is not on fixed terms: it makes a gift, or does whatever it does as a friend does. This kind of teaching is always a luxury for the teacher/leader and a form of leisure (in Greek ‘schole’) for them and the students/followers; an activity meaningful for both, having no ulterior purpose.
In addition, the discussion will include systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, the construction and maintenance of a confirming/affirming communication climate, and building shared interdisciplinary envisioning between teachers/leaders and their students/followers.

This new Professional Development offering is for FTCC Employees ONLY! Participants will need to have enrollment to FTCC as a student and fill out a Tuition Free Course Form. Participants earn class credits as well as Certification. Certification tests are face to face but the class is online. This course provides guidance and resources on the functions, operations and effective practices for effective Advisory Committees.
Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion and 1 PD hour.

Where: BlackBoard (click here). Log into Blackboard, go to Community. In the search box, type in advisory, and click on FTCC Advisory Committee Guidelines. Enter the Access Code: advisory and submit.

The SafeColleges portal has over 100 online professional development courses in Human Resources (Workplace Relationships), Environmental and Occupational Safety (OSHA), Public Safety and Security, Health and Nutrition Services, and more.
At the end of each course, you must pass a short quiz in order to receive credit and get your certificate. Once you complete the quiz, you will be asked if you’d like to print a certificate. Please keep your certificates in your own personal file.
