Assistant Volleyball Coach
Tyler Malpass
Tyler Malpass, a Clinton, NC native, joins FTCC Volleyball as an Assistant Coach for the 2024 season.
Malpass comes to FTCC with a combined 15+ years of playing and coaching experience. Currently, he serves as a head coach and lead clinician for attacking/blocking at Lakewood Area Volleyball Association (LAVA). In addition to developing players at LAVA, he is a mentor for new coaches who join the club. His most recent experience includes finishing a successful season with 2A Midway High School who was one match shy of appearing in the NCHSAA State Championship. Midway finished 24-5 on the season and went undefeated in conference play.
His passion for volleyball began in middle school when volleyball was not as easily accessible for boys. Unable to play on an organized team in NC, he trained with his high school’s girls’ team until joining the only boys travel team in the state during his sophomore year. He was then selected to play for North Carolina’s High Performance Team during his junior and senior years to compete at HP Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Madison, WI, respectively.
Malpass started his collegiate athletic career at NCAA Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology. After completing his freshman season with the Highlanders, he transferred to Division II Barton College. Malpass played for the Bulldogs from 2012-2014 where he served as a middle blocker. While playing in Wilson, NC, Malpass led Barton’s inaugural men’s program as team captain in their first two campaigns. Off the court, Malpass was named to the Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference Team for 3 consecutive seasons. He was also named the Sportsmanship award recipient by Barton Athletics for the 2012 season. Outside of his own season, he served as a student coach and manager for the Lady Bulldogs. Upon graduation, Malpass served as the Assistant Coach for the women’s program for an additional season.
Malpass graduated cum laude from Barton College in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice & Criminology.
