Overview/EPP Residency Licensure Program:

Fayetteville Technical Community College began it’s Elementary Education Residency Licensure Certificate Program in the Spring of 2024 to support teachers beginning their Residency License Journey. Residency Licensure is the NCDPI approved Alternative Pathway to Initial Licensure.

The state of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) collaborated with the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) to develop the Cultivating Carolina Classrooms program to provide a streamlined opportunity in the community college that simplifies, aligns, and accelerates the pathway to elementary education licensure for people who have completed a bachelor’s degree and have obtained a position in a school system that requires a teaching license.

Course Work

The Elementary Education Residency Licensure Certificate curriculum provides a course of study leading to the development of the general pedagogical competencies needed to become eligible for teacher licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). FTCC offers six courses, focused on the pedagogy of teaching as well as preparation for licensure and certification. The program will meet the individual needs of each student while working in cohorts with other teachers in the same residency program. Students are mentored and supported by experienced faculty who are licensed teachers and have years of experience teaching in the elementary school environment. Because this program features 16 week online coursework, you have the flexibility to study while continuing to teach.

Program Completion:
To complete the program and be recommended for licensure eligibility, learners complete the following in their three years of NCDPI Residency Licensure:

  • Six courses (18 credit hours) with a grade of “C” or better.
  • Required Testing with minimum passing scores (Praxis Math: 150 & Pearson Reading: 229)
  • edTPA (passing scores all components)

Program Eligibility and Admission:

The Residency Licensure Certificate program is designed for college graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field and desire to become an elementary education teacher.

For admission into the program, the candidate must:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, or eligible for employment.
  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree with a 2.7 GPA or higher.
  • Have completed 24 hours of coursework in the requested licensure area or passed the North Carolina State Board of Education (NCSBE) required content area examination(s) for the requested licensure area.
  • Provide a letter of employment or promised placement from the PSU/LE

All interested applicants should complete the Alternative NC Teaching Licensure: NCCS Cultivating Carolina Classrooms- NCCCS Residency Licensure Program Application online through CFNC to apply. (*Please note: Applications are completed through CFNC, not on the FTCC website.)

Applicant Steps:

  1. Create a CFNC account to access the application link (required by the system)
  2. Click “Apply to College”
  3. Click “Application Hub” CFNC.org – Application Hub
  4. Click “Start an Application”
  5. Select “Alternative NC Teaching Licensure: NCCCS Cultivating Carolina Classrooms.”
    1. At the start of the application, you must complete the “Residency Determination” form using your social security card and driver’s license
    2. In addition to the application, students must provide: • unofficial transcripts for admissions purposes • official transcripts once admitted to the program • a letter of employment or promised placement from the PSU/LEA
  6. When you arrive at the field for “Educator Prep Program,” you will be asked to select your top three community college options. Please select “Fayetteville Technical Community College” as your first option.
  7. Submit your application
  8. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will be contacted by the NCCCS EPP Program Coordinator to determine eligibility and college placement of the applicant.
  9. The application will then be forwarded to FTCC for admission to the Residency Licensure Certificate program. The applicant will be officially enrolled in the FTCC RLCP once an official transcript(s) is received and reviewed by admissions

Program Financial Aid Eligibility

Students admitted to the program are required to hold a bachelor’s degree and therefore, would not be eligible for federal financial assistance. Students may apply for local scholarships and grants.
