Softball hosted Brunswick Community College in game three of their series on Wednesday, April 3. It was Autism Awareness Night and the Trojans secured the series sweep during the event at JP Riddle Stadium. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event and to special guests from The School of Hope for throwing out the first pitch and being in attendance.
With this win, the Trojans are now .500 in conference play and are #6 in Region 10 DII Softball.
FTCC vs. Brunswick- 10-2, Win 6-innings
The Dolphins scored one run in the top of the first inning and one more in the third to lead up until the bottom of the third inning when the Trojans plated five runs and never looked back.
Madeline Burns (Sanford, NC) started off the five-run rally with a single to center field and Isabella Finelli (Pembroke, NC) followed with another single. Trinity Gaither (Bunnlevel, NC) walked to load the bases before Morgan Brady (Fayetteville, NC) smashed a line drive double in the right center gap to score all three Trojan baserunners to take the first lead of the game. Nyla Mitchell (Lumberton, NC) grounded into a Dolphin’s error, which allowed the fourth run to cross the plate. Ava Basolt (Sanford, NC) had an RBI ground out to score the fifth Trojan run of the inning.
The Trojans scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. Kaylee Frank (Fayetteville, NC) led off with a line drive single to center field. Basolt hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. Lowery grounded in a fielder’s choice to score Frank from third base. With one out, Burns hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Basolt to tag up and score from third base.
Three more runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the eight-run run rule to end the game early. Mitchell and Frank had back to back singles to start the inning. With one out, Lowery and Krista McLean (Dunn, NC) had two outfield singles to put two more Trojan runs on the scoreboard. With a Dolphin error and an infield pop out, Gaither hit a two-out up the middle line drive to score the last run the Trojans needed to end the game.
Lowery threw the first 4.1 innings for the Trojans giving up five hits and one earned run, while striking out three. Basolt finished the game throwing the final 1.2 innings, facing five batters and striking out four of them.
The Trojans had 15 hits with Gaither, Brady, Frank and Burns each having two and Lowery added three.
Softball is on the road this weekend as they travel to Raleigh to take on the Eagles of Wake Tech for their next conference series. They will play a single game on Friday at 2pm and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1pm.
