Fayetteville Technical Community College is pleased to welcome North Carolina-based composer, creator and educator Brittany J. Green for a series of public events at the College Feb. 20-29.
Green’s visit is part of the FTCC Music Department’s Guest Artist Concert Series.
Green will hold public talks and demonstrations and perform at an evening concert. Each event is free and open to the public and will be held in Cumberland Hall Auditorium on FTCC’s Fayetteville campus.
- Tuesday, Feb. 20, noon: Green will lead a campus-wide panel on the topic of “Community and Collaboration in the Arts.” The panel will feature FTCC faculty members Dr. Sonny Kelly, Katharine Morrill and Dexter Morrill.
- Thursday, Feb. 22, noon: Green will give a lecture on “Curating a Career as a Musician.”
- Thursday, Feb. 22, 7pm: Green will perform at a multimedia lecture-recital titled “Feel. Like. THIS.” The event will explore the concepts of ancestry, Black womanhood and Black joy through works created by Green. Joining Green will be pianist Monthati Masebe, dancer Ayan Felix and poet Marlanda Dekine.
- Tuesday, Feb. 27, noon: Green will give a lecture on “Confronting Blackness in Music: An Exploration of Black Experimentalism.” The lecture will include a focus on Green’s music and that of music of Julius Eastman and George E. Lewis.
- Thursday, Feb. 29, noon: Green will host an Ableton Live Hands-On Workshop where she will demonstrate how she uses Ableton Live to create, improvise and perform. Attendees are invited to bring their laptops so they can get a basic understanding of Ableton Live and create a song with Green.
Green describes her music as facilitating intimate musical spaces that ignite visceral responses at the intersection of sound, video, movement and text. Her music has been featured at venues around the country. Green holds awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, ASCAP Foundation and New Music USA. She received a bachelor’s degree in music education at UNC-Pembroke, a master’s degree in music composition and theory from East Carolina University and is now pursuing a PhD in music composition at Duke University, where she is a Dean’s Graduate Fellow.
