Watts said she was honored to be chosen for the role.

“As an educator, I recognize the importance of sharing innovative, pedagogical practices and research,” she said. “The implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies is key to achieving our collective mission of maximizing student success. I welcome the opportunity to network and collaborate with colleagues.”

Wolf said he’s looking forward to the experience and hopes to encourage faculty to share their experiences in achieving excellence.

“Joining the kinds of conversations the NCCCJTI hopes to start is a wonderful way for us to see we have partners and collaborators all over the state, each of us struggling with and overcoming many of the same challenges,” he said.

The journal announced Watts and Wolf’s selection in August. Each will serve a three-year term, with duties including reviewing/editing two to four manuscripts per year during the production phase. Teaching Innovation will publish its first issue in March 2022 and then publish twice annually, said Editor-in-Chief Josh Howell.

Competitive application process

Watts and Wolf were selected through a competitive application process. The journal will have five board members and an editorial staff of 30.

“She has great credentials, holds a doctorate and she has some experience working with peer-reviewed scholarly articles,” Howell said of Watts. “What set her apart from other faculty was her psychology background. That’s a representation we wanted.”

This won’t be a new a role for Watts. As a graduate student, she served as a student reviewer for the “Journal of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children” and as an Ad Hoc Reviewer for “Psychology in the Schools.”

“The opportunity to evaluate academic manuscripts as a student was a unique learning experience and sparked my interest in academic writing,” she said. “I look forward to contributing my editorial experience to this new role and hope to contribute to the dissemination of quality writing and research.”

Wolf is also looking forward to the experience. “This journal carries with it an invitation to join into the practice of thoughtful reflection and development of our own teaching communities,” he said.

Watts joined the College in July 2020. Her main responsibilities include leading the curriculum division in the ongoing process of continuous improvement; ensuring programs comply with state, regional and national standards; and monitoring the program review process.

Wolf joined FTCC last October. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in Literature from North Carolina State University.

The North Carolina Community College Journal of Teaching Innovation falls under the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association, part of the state community college system.
