Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Series

Who:  FTCC Faculty Professional Development

What: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Series by Dr. Sonny Kelly

This interactive workshop will be led by Dr. Sonny Kelly, an expert in interpersonal communication. Participants will engage the subject of forging diverse personal connections in an innovative and practical way. Using storytelling, poetry, and examples from participants’ own experiences, Dr. Kelly will lead them through a process of diagnosing positive and confirming communication environments versus negative and disconfirming communication environments. Participants will learn clear tactics on effective ways to create and maintain positive and confirming communication environments while speaking truth to power (“coaching up”) and speaking truth with power (“coaching down” and “coaching laterally”). All of this hinges upon the practice of taking on a dual perspective – putting ourselves in others’ shoes just long enough to understand the world through their eyes (Wood, 2020).

Presenter: William H. Johnson, Jr.National Expert on Guided Pathways, Student Success Navigator/Instructor and Life Design Catalyst Coach and Facilitator, UNC Greensboro

Guided Pathways 1.0 is defined as “a movement that seeks to streamline a student’s journey through college by providingNcssc structured choice, revamped support, and clear learning outcomes – ultimately helping more students achieve their college completion goals.” (EAB, 2019). The one problem? It’s institution-centered, focused on outcomes that are driven by institutional goals.

Who:  NC Student Success Center

What: Positionality and Pathways:  Encouraging Reflective Practice

Presenter: Dr. Alexander S. Kappus, Senior Director for Student Success in the College of Education, NC State University

The Guided Pathways model encourages colleges to make deliberate decisions about student success, both in designing pathways and supporting students through their journey. In social science inquiry, scholars often write a positionality statement about how their identities may influence their research. How often do we consider how our own social identities may bias, cloud, or cause us to make harmful assumptions about students? In this session, participants will participate in an identity mapping exercise and consider ways to close equity gaps by encouraging a culture of reflective practice while carrying out the four pillars.

Micromessages include looks, gestures, tone of voice, or the framing of feedback that subtly yet powerfully shape our culture, institutions, classrooms, and the individuals within them. The curriculum combines the power of micromessages with research-based social learning theories including self-efficacy, educator mindset, attribution theory, and stereotype threat. Micromessaging addresses bias, the impact of the dominant narrative, asset-versus deficit-based thinking, student voice, and building community.

Equity Talk to Equity Walk Book Club Discussion

Who:  FTCC Faculty Professional Development

What: Equity Talk to Equity Walk Book Club Discussion: Expanding Practitioner Knowledge for Racial Justice in Higher Education

Facilitated by: Center for Faculty Development

From Equity Talk to Equity Walk offers practical guidance on the design and application of campus change strategies for achieving equitable outcomes. Drawing from campus-based research projects sponsored by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and theEquity Talk Equity Walk Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California, this invaluable resource provides real-world steps that reinforce primary elements for examining equity in student achievement, while challenging educators to specifically focus on racial equity as a critical lens for institutional and systemic change.

Colleges and universities have placed greater emphasis on education equity in recent years. Acknowledging the changing realities and increasing demands placed on contemporary postsecondary education, this book meets educators where they are and offers an effective design framework for what it means to move beyond equity being a buzzword in higher education. Central concepts and key points are illustrated through campus examples. This indispensable guide presents academic administrators and staff with advice on building an equity-minded campus culture, aligning strategic priorities and institutional missions to advance equity, understanding equity-minded data analysis, developing campus strategies for making excellence inclusive, and moving from a first-generation equity educator to an equity-minded practitioner.

From Equity Talk to Equity Walk: A Guide for Campus-Based Leadership and Practice is a vital wealth of information for college and university presidents and provosts, academic and student affairs professionals, faculty, and practitioners who seek to dismantle institutional barriers that stand in the way of achieving equity, specifically racial equity to achieve equitable outcomes in higher education.

Leadership Presentation

Who:  FTCC Faculty Professional Development

What: Envisioning Transformational Leadership

Presenters: Dr. Dwarka Ramphal, Communications Department Chair, Dr. Sonny Kelly, Communications Instructor, Mary DiRisio, FTCC Director of Library Services

Transformational Leadership is a type of leadership style where teachers/leaders actively work with their students/followers to become better (more agential, accountable, positive, and healthy) people. Through this process, both teachers/leaders and students/followers are transformed into agents of change(especially in a collegial atmosphere). Aristotle speaks of this as a “moral type of friendship” which is not on fixed terms: it makes a gift, or does whatever it does as a friend does. This kind of teaching is always a luxury for the teacher/leader and a form of leisure (in Greek ‘schole’) for them and the students/followers; an activity meaningful for both, having no ulterior purpose.

In addition, the discussion will include systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, the construction and maintenance of a confirming/affirming communication climate, and building shared interdisciplinary envisioning between teachers/leaders and their students/followers.
