Medical Laboratory Program Goals

  • The Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares the student to meet the following program goals, which will ensure mastery of basic skills needed for job entry

The MLT graduate will be able to:

  • Discern diagnostic testing orders, detecting and resolving discrepancies and determining that correct supporting documentation has been provided by the provider.
  • Perform accurate sample collection on blood and body fluids based upon diagnostic testing orders.
  • Receive and process all blood and body fluid sample in accordance with requested testing.
  • Perform all documentation with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
  • Maintain the quality of all testing platforms and environments associated with specific testing procedures, regulatory mandates, and laboratory directions.
  • Perform diagnostic testing on blood and body fluids using various testing platforms and assay methodologies with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
  • Correlate patient test results to patient diagnosis and/or condition.
  • Troubleshoot situations and determine effective and efficient resolution pathways based upon timeliness of test performance.
  • Prepare patient test results for final reporting using both manual and automated methods.
  • Report patient test results that are free of errors.
  • Reflect on process and performance, suggesting ways to make improvements to various laboratory processes and procedures.
  • Communicate with all customers in a clear manner that prevents misunderstanding and miscommunication of information.

Course Work

The mission of the FTCC MLT Program is to serve local, regional, national, and global communities by delivering exceptional patient-focused and learner-centered instruction to all people seeking a career in the field of Clinical Laboratory Science. The program has a vision to become the leader of patient-focused Medical Laboratory Technology education that is rooted in continual process and performance improve by training students to not only solve complex problems but to implement preventative measure that prevent error and increase patient safety.

Course work includes clinical rotations to area health care facilities, potential exposure to infectious disease and pathogens, requirement to adhere to personal safety precautions, and potentially extended periods of standing and/or sitting during task performance. Medical Laboratory Technology students will attend clinical rotations that may be geographically disbursed and can be both day or evening hours throughout the semester.

Career Paths

Graduates may be eligible to apply to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification exam. Graduates may be employed in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, medical laboratories, governmental agencies, and industry.
