The North Carolina Postsecondary Leaders (NCPL) program selected Tony Murphy, director of Veterans Programs for Fayetteville Technical Community College, as a participant in its inaugural cohort for education leaders from across the state.
The eight-month program will provide an opportunity for those leaders “to develop deeper connections with their higher education peers, connect directly with students, and develop the knowledge and will to lead on higher education in their local community and across the state.” Participants will come from a variety of policy roles, different regions and backgrounds for NCPL’s four sessions.
Murphy learned one reason he was chosen to be among the 24 participants was for his committed work to military and veteran students at FTCC. The Air Force veteran, who served for 21 years, began working at FTCC in 2018. He oversees the All American Veterans Center, which serves military veterans and their dependents in their educational goals. Murphy is a graduate of Alaska Pacific University and for his master’s, Liberty University.
“I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with nonpartisan education leaders and national resource experts on ways to better support veterans in their pursuit of postsecondary degrees and credentials,” Murphy said.
NCPL was launched by The Hunt Institute, based in Cary, which describes itself as a leader in the movement to transform public education.
“The leadership program will be driven by the belief that education beyond high school is critical to future social and economic success and that community, political, and education leaders must coordinate with business leaders to align learning opportunities with workforce demands,” the institute states.
The institute will cover tuition, round-trip travel expenses and accommodations for participants who are scheduled to meet in Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Wilmington and Tennessee during the next year.
