Fayetteville Technical Community College today provided thousands of items of personal protective equipment to Cape Fear Valley Health Friday for its use during the coronavirus outbreak. The College had previously loaned the health system four medical ventilators.

“It’s our pleasure and our honor to provide this personal protective equipment to support our healthcare providers as they combat the COVID-19 virus,” said FTCC President J. Larry Keen. “These are the heroes on the front lines and we support them. FTCC is continuing to educate and train people in these vital healthcare fields.”

The College also donated 150 masks and hundreds of gloves to the N.C. State Veterans Home.

“This is so appreciated,” said Cathy Johnson, who handles infectious control at the veterans home on Cochran Avenue. She said the home has 150 residents. There have been no diagnoses there of COVID-19.

FTCC uses personal protective equipment for students in many of its healthcare programs, as well as its funeral services program. The school retained some supplies for students but, because such equipment has been in short supply in many parts of the country and is essential for the safety of healthcare personnel, it provided the rest it had on hand to Cape Fear Valley for use by its staff.

The College had previously loaned its four medical ventilators to the healthcare system. The machines help critically ill patients breathe.

Supplies provided to Cape Fear Valley Friday included face shields, N-95 masks, regular medical face masks, gloves, isolation gowns, aprons, lab jackets, head covers, as well as disinfectant and hand sanitizer.

Fayetteville Technical Community College was established in 1961 and serves over 38,000 students annually by providing over 280 occupational, technical, general education, college transfer and continuing education programs to meet the needs and desires of students and the community.
