Are you a new or returning student for FTCC’s Fall semester?
FTCC has implemented the Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) developmental model.
Current, returning, and new students who do not have college credits, ACT or SAT scores, will be placed by unweighted high school GPA into one of three categories:
- Students with a GPA 2.8+ may register for any class.
- Students with a GPA 2.2-2.799 may enroll in a gateway course with a mandatory co-requisite.
- Students with a GPA < 2.2 must enroll in a one-semester transition course.
Regardless of GPA, a student that has not successfully completed Math 2 prior to High School graduation should register for Transition Math and/or English.
Students who graduated from High School and/or do not have an unweighted GPA may be required to take an assessment. Each student’s record will be reviewed and students will be placed using the model that best serves the student’s success.
Placement Testing
Curriculum courses at FTCC require foundational skills in reading, English and math. Unless applicants meet one of the test exemptions, the Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) test is required to evaluate any areas in which you need refresher help.

What to Expect
Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE)
The Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) is used to assess a student’s English, Reading and Math readiness and identifies which course or courses best fit a student’s college skill level. There is no fee to take the RISE. The placement can take approximately two to three hours and is available Monday – Friday. A customized state version of the EdReady RISE test will be administered at all 58 North Carolina Community Colleges by Fall 2020.
RISE Test Format
English has two tiers:
Tier One: Introduction to College Reading and Writing, Identifying Main Ideas, Discovering Implied Meaning, Interpreting Bias, Analysis through Definition, Learning Across Disciplines
Tier Two: Exploring Comparative Elements, Informed Opinions through Casual Chains, Applied Critical Analysis, Using Sources in Critical Reading and Writing
Math has three tiers:
Tier One: whole numbers; fractions and mixed numbers; decimals; ratio, proportion and rates; percent; measurement, geometry and real numbers
Tier Two: solving equations and inequalities; graphing; exponents and polynomials; concepts in statistics
Tier Three: rational expressions; radical expressions and quadratic equations; factoring; systems of equations and inequalities; and functions
The RISE assess students’ English, reading, and math college readiness skills. It is not a pass or fail test but it is important to do your best. The results will determine the appropriate level of English and math courses to enroll in at FTCC. RISE scores are valid for ten years from test date.
