Associate in Science (A.S.)

Credential: Degree

Program Code: A10400

Welcome to the Associate in Science degree! The Associate in Science degree is geared towards students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to further pursue a degree in areas of study such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics or other pre-professional programs that require strong math and science backgrounds. Our courses give students the opportunity to establish a firm foundation of scientific inquiry by developing crucial skills in observation, analysis, and critical thinking. The AS degree follows a plan of study consisting of Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) courses, pre-major articulation courses, and general education courses. UGETC courses are courses that will transfer for equivalency credit within the University of North Carolina college system. The AS degree program of study is structured to include two components:

The Universal General Education Transfer Component comprises a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit. Additional general education, pre-major, and elective courses that prepare students for successful transfer into selected majors at UNC institutions comprise and additional 30-31 hours, bringing the total number of hours in the degree programs to 60-61 semester hours. Fayetteville Technical Community College offers a wide variety of general education elective and pre-major elective courses in a number of disciplines, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics to provide students a head start on their desired major at a four-year college or university. To ensure maximum transferability of credits, students should select a transfer major and preferred transfer university before completing the 30 semester hours of UGETC credit at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Additional general education, pre-major, and elective courses should be selected based on a student's intended major and transfer institution.
